Overview

The Department of Neurodegenerative Disease at UCL continues to lead internationally in advancing research on dementia-related conditions.

Within this department, the UCL Huntington’s Disease Centre—directed by Professor Sarah Tabrizi, alongside Professor Gillian Bates and Professor Ed Wild—has established itself as a pioneering hub for translational research.

The Centre bridges cellular research, target validation, and early-phase clinical trials, specifically focusing on Huntington’s disease. Its work spans preclinical innovation through to ‘first-in-human’ studies, often hosted at the Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre (LWENC), and paves the way for larger-scale phase 2 and 3 clinical trials.

Role Overview

An opening has arisen for a Clinical Research Coordinator to oversee the continuation of the Huntington’s Disease Young Adult Study (HD-YAS 2.0). Building upon the foundational work of the original HD-YAS, this role focuses on managing study operations involving young gene carriers, long before the onset of clinical symptoms, with the aim of identifying early biomarkers of neurodegeneration. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining data quality, safeguarding participant well-being, and ensuring scientific milestones are met within agreed timelines and budgets.

In addition, the post holder will coordinate the UCL site for Enroll-HD, a global registry project for Huntington’s disease. Responsibilities will include participant recruitment and assessments, visit coordination, and liaising with both research and clinical teams across UCL, NHNN, and LWENC. Support will also be provided for a range of experimental Huntington’s disease trials, including gene-silencing therapies led by Professor Tabrizi, in collaboration with UCLH and the LWENC.

Contract Details

This is a fixed-term maternity cover post funded by the NIHR Research Delivery Network, with availability from 15 September 2025 through 28 March 2026, or until the original post-holder returns or funding concludes—whichever comes first. Applicants from within UCL are welcome to apply on a secondment basis. An honorary contract with UCLH NHS Foundation Trust will be required, subject to DBS clearance.

Candidate Profile

Applicants must possess a relevant Honours degree (e.g., in biological sciences or psychology) and bring demonstrable experience in neurodegenerative research. Prior work in Huntington’s disease, including direct patient interaction and clinical trial involvement, is essential. Strong project and financial management competencies are required, along with the ability to manage multifaceted research initiatives.

Eligibility and Sponsorship

This role qualifies for both a Skilled Worker visa and a Global Talent visa under UK immigration criteria. International applicants requiring sponsorship are encouraged to apply.

Remuneration and Benefits

The position offers a starting salary of £43,374 per annum (inclusive of London Allowance) and includes a comprehensive benefits package:

  • 41 days annual leave (comprising 27 days holiday, 8 public holidays, and 6 university closure days)
  • Option to purchase up to 5 additional leave days annually
  • Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) pension scheme
  • Season ticket and cycle-to-work loans
  • Immigration loan assistance
  • On-site nursery and gym facilities
  • Enhanced parental and adoption pay
  • Access to staff support and counselling services
  • Discounted private medical insurance

Further information about employee benefits can be accessed at UCL Benefits.

Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion

The Institute of Neurology is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Active participation in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives is integral to the department’s culture, with 12% of staff engaged in related projects. The Institute holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award in recognition of its efforts to promote gender equality. UCL encourages applications from individuals of underrepresented backgrounds, including those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups, disabled persons, LGBTQI+ and gender-diverse communities, and women in senior academic and professional roles.
